Terry Fox ran his "Marathon of Hope" in the hopes that others wouldn't have to suffer from cancer as he did. He started in St. John's Newfoundland and on one leg ran 26 km (16 miles) per day until he reached just outside Thunder Bay (5,373 km, or 3,339 mi). His marathon was cut short as the cancer returned, he returned home with the intent to get treatment and finish his marathon, he passed away one year later at the age of 22.
